The Health Benefits of Dance for Children https://motiondancecentre.ca/the-health-benefits-of-dance-for-children/ Sat, 14 Apr 2018 03:12:32 +0000 https://motiondancecentre.ca/?p=951 The post The Health Benefits of Dance for Children appeared first on Motion Dance Centre.

As a dancer and dance educator I have not only observed the benefits of a dance education in myelf  but also my students. Dance has many physical and mental benefits. Dance education can improve a child’s physical health by building their cardiovascular system, increasing flexibility, improving balance, expanding their range of motion and develping their spatial awareness. Dance also has many mental benefits including emotional maturity ,social awareness and improved memory skills.

When I began my dance education, I was a shy, awkward and anxious child who couldn’t do a pushup or run for more than a minute. As I continued my dance education journey, I started to become more confident in myself. As I learned new dance moves I felt accomplished and like I could do something right. My anxiety lessened because I was in a positive environment with people who enjoyed the same passions as me. Dance  allowed me to express my emotions and lighten the burden of my anxiety by reliving anxious energy through movement. I also noticed many physical benefits from my dance education; I grew stronger form conditioning, my cardiovascular skills improved from working on dance routines and I became much more flexible.

Here is a photo of me (A.K.A Miss. Serena) as a young dancer.

Dance gave me the ability to express my anxious energy through movement.

-Miss.Serena

In a dance class at MDC children can express their emotions through movement starting at age 18 months. This allows children to release emotional stress and anxiety of the day in a physical way.Expression makes it so children can express their feelings better, a skill which is very important throughout life.Dance can also improve a child’s social interaction skills. Dance encourages students to work together in a team setting and teaches them teamworking skills. Children learn to communicate with one another and how they themselves interact with others. These are skills that are invaluable for children to learn.

Check out team Energy in the photo below. Team Energy was bonding and having LOTS of fun at Limelight dance competition in March ,making memories that will last a lifetime and without even knowing it, developing the invaluable life skills mentioned above.

On the physical side of things dance can be as physically beneficial to a child as biking, swimming or other sports. A dance education at MDC is a great way for children to stay active in a fun and engaging way.

Dance strengthens the weight-bearing bones of children as they develop. These bones include the femur, tibia, and fibula. The physical repetitive actions of dance in the lower body increase the range of motion in the lower back and hip joints which allows children to grow up with proper posture and will prevent lower back pain problems later in their lives.

A dance education at MDC would have endless benefits for your child; both physically and mentally. I have seen these benefits within myself and in my students.

Thinking of registering your child for a dance class here at MDC? DO IT , I believe your child would benefit immensely from a dance education here at MDC, beginning at a young age. Our classes begin at age 18 months in various styles. Contact us or follow us on social media below for more information about joining our #mdcfam.

Are You Ready For Competition ? https://motiondancecentre.ca/are-you-ready-for-competition/ https://motiondancecentre.ca/are-you-ready-for-competition/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2018 19:16:57 +0000 https://motiondancecentre.ca/?p=928 The post Are You Ready For Competition ? appeared first on Motion Dance Centre.

Competition season is coming up quick.  Make sure you’re prepared with these tips from the seasoned staff of MDC.

Tip One: Make a checklist.

Prior to competition write down everything you need for each of your dance routines . This way as you pack you can check off everything you need without the terrible feeling that you forgot something .

Some things to include on your checklist are ….

Bobby pins , hairspray , elastics, dance shoes , ALL your costumes , a water bottle and maybe even some backstage snacks. And of course anything else your dance teacher told you to bring .

Tip Two: Pack your bag the night before

You don’t want to be running around like a crazy person the day of competition. Especially if it’s an early morning.  Have your checklist ready and pack your bag the night before to avoid the last minute rush out the door. This way you can start your competition day stress free!

Tip Three: HAVE FUN

This may just be the most important tip of all . Remember with all the hustle and bustle that competition season brings the most important thing to take away from it is not a medal or a big trophy but the memories of a good time.

We are all so excited for competition season here at MDC and can’t wait to hit the stage. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date on all things MDC.

When Jordan grows up she wants to be a teacher. A pretty cool fact about Jordan is that she can lick her nose with her tongue. Very cool Jordan!

Avery has been part of the Mdc Fam since September 2015. She is in our Junior Hip Hop class and her favourite style is also Hip Hop.

When Avery grows up she would like to be a vet. A fun fact about Avery is that her favourite food is pears. A great healthy option Avery!

Over the last two months our dancers here at Mdc have been working incredibly hard and it totally showed in our Christmas presentation of The Nutcracker.

We are so proud of all our students and have noticed tremendous improvement in each and every one of them over the past few months.

A few students especially stood out to the mdc staff for their incredible attitudes and work ethic!

Drum roll please,

Presenting our November and December students of the month …

For November the Mdc staff would like to congratulate Lauren Evans and Savannah Corkum.

Lauren is a competitive dancer on team Pulse. Lauren also takes Ballet and Jumps and Turns to further develop her technique. Lauren loves dance because it is a fun way to express yourself.

The Mdc staff have noticed a huge improvement in Lauren’s technique and she never misses a class! Way to go Lauren , keep up the great work.

Savannah is a recreational dancer. Savannah is in 3 classes and is only 3 years old! Savannah is in Creative Movement , Hip Hop Tots and Tappin Tots.

Savannah will be doing a solo this spring which she is thrilled for . She is especially excited to wear her kitty cat costume onstage!

For December our dancers of the month are Sarah Rogers ( pictured left) and Marla Call (pictured right).

Marla is in Junior Acro and has been working extremely hard in her acro classes to improve her handstands and cartwheels. Keep up the hard  work Marla!

Sarah is on team Pulse and an assistant on Wednesday nights for Hip Hop Tots , Momentum and Jumps and Turns. Over the past few months Sarah has been a huge help in the classes she assists while preparing for our Christmas show. On top of her amazing help assisting Sarah also excelled in her solo role as Clara in The Nutcracker. Sarah’s passion really shows through in both her dancing and teaching.

Wow, what an amazing weekend. We are so proud of all our dancers that performed this past weekend in Mdc’s presentation of the Nutcracker! Mdc had 135 dancers onstage , 77 being under 8 years old!

Jazz , tap , ballet , hip hop , we had it all! All of our dances performed to original music form George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker.  This put an original spin on all of our pieces and gave our dancers here at mdc a unique opportunity to perform to traditional instrumental music no matter what style their dance was.

Who says you can’t do Hip Hop to orchestra music? Not us here at mdc!!

For many of our dancers it was their first time performing on the big stage and they blew us away!

Our older dancers also rocked it onstage.  Below are Sarah and Gabby from Pulse troupe who did an amazing job in their solo roles as Clara and the Nutcracker prince.

We also had Momentum dancer Hayden as Fritz.

And Pulse dancer Berta as The Sugar Plum Fairy.

We can’t forget to mention The Motion Daddies who dazzled the audience during intermission with their dads in tutu’s show to raise money for our NYC 2018 trip.Way to go dads!

We are so proud of each and every one of our dancers who took the stage over the weekend. Thank- you all for working so so hard not only on Sunday, but the whole term leading up to the show. We could feel the love from our #mdcfam.

We have some pretty brave dads here at MDC…

In July 2018 several of our competitive dancers are heading to NEW YORK CITY for National Dance Day. To help them fundraise for their trip , these brave dads are going to be dancing a ballet routine in our Christmas recital at intermission!

As you can see these dads are working very hard to put on an amazing performance.

They need YOUR help though. The dads are aiming to raise pledges and only if they raise enough will they perform this lovely routine they have been working oh so hard on. To pledge you can DM us on Instagram or Facebook , send us an email or purchase recital ticket to come watch the show , Sunday December 17th at 3pm.

Can’t make it to the show? That’s no excuse. There will be a link that can be forwarded to you of the dads in tutus dance after the recital on December 17th.

So , what are waiting for ? Get those pledges in!

Wow , each time members of our MDC fam hit the stage they impress us more and more.

At the beginning of the month team Synergy along with Momentum dancer , Sienna ,packed their bags and headed to Dance Quest 2017 in Saint John New Brunswick where their talent and passion blew us away!

The dancers performed a total of 9 routines. They Received multiple gold medals, a top mark award and a special judges award.

Traveling competitions are such an amazing way for dancers to bond and travel with their dance friends. It truly is an experience that creates friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

It was such a fun filled weekend and everyone was getting into the dance spirit. Including one of our younger dancers , Savannah, who had come to cheer the older dancers on. Here she is showing off her hip hop face she learned from some of our older MDC fam members. Remember bigs, a little is always watching!

We are so proud of all our dancers who attended Dance Quest 2017. It was such a great experience and we cannot wait to see what Dance Quest 2018 will bring!
